I am Dr. Karen Gless, PhD, MFT, RN,

Iam a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFC21423), and a Registered Nurse. Since 1985 I have had a successful practice as a Marriage and Family Therapist. It is my goal to help couples enjoy all areas of their relationship. My focus is on brief therapy whenever possible.

The basic values I follow in my therapy are:

Warm Caring Effective

Expressing warm, caring feelings in therapy and in life begins with feeling safe. An important part of therapy is creating a safe place for my clients to explore themselves and their relationship. Each partner needs to experience that how they think and feel is important and has value so that they can feel safe to express themselves. I create a space for my clients to feel valued and to express themselves so that they can grow at their own pace and remain true to their own values.

One of my specializations is sex therapy. Sex is a part of a deeper intimacy in a loving, fulfilling relationship. A rewarding, affectionate sex life increases the good feelings a couple has for each other and draws them closer together.

Caring Caring:
In my practice I care about each couple that comes to see me and about each individual within that couple. I tell my couples, “Each of you counts and your relationship counts. A house is built with a foundation, walls and a roof. Love is the foundation. Both of you make up the walls and the relationship is the roof. You cannot have a house without all of its parts. A roof cannot be held up with only one wall so each of you must count if the relationship is to survive.” Just as each individual person is unique, so is each couple. I truly embrace the uniqueness of each couple that I work with and I enjoy helping each couple discover their own specialness and uniqueness. I see each relationship as different from every other relationship in the world and I believe that each relationship adds something special to the world because of its uniqueness.

I make a special effort to avoid taking sides in couples counseling. I make a special effort to see things from the point of view of each partner and understand how both men and women see the world.

Effective: Effective
There have been some amazing advances in the practice of couples therapy in recent years. I use the latest technology to help my couples get control over their conflicts. I have spent many years studying a wide range of therapeutic approaches to sort out the best that those therapies have to offer.

Flooding is a recent discovery in couples therapy. Flooding happens when people get so upset during an argument that their pulse is over 100 and they become flooded with adrenaline. Flooding is very destructive in a relationship. I use a pulse monitor to help couples recognize when they are about to flood so they can back off and have more constructive conflicts.
